3 Day Johannesburg Orientation

Ferðaáætlun

3 Day Johannesburg Orientation

Day 1

You will be picked up and taken to the hostel that is situated in the heart of the vibrant Maboneng district. The hostel has a history closely linked with the apartheid era having been the premises of the Pacific Press that published material for the ANC and Black Sash, and is rumoured to have offered refuge to ANC greats like Mandela and Slovo. Today it is home to lively accommodation that is the ideal base from which to explore the city. Room options include standard rooms and dorms (with individual lockers and reading lights), and facilities include an on site bar/cafeteria, open-plan kitchen and Wi-Fi. Dinner is served at Curiocity

Day 2

After breakfast, you will be taken around the sites of Johannesburg like a local with one of the local guides from your hostel. We will start off with a visit to Soweto, South Africa’s biggest township and here you will have the opportunity to take some photos at the iconic Orlando Towers and Soccer City, home of the World Cup final. We then head to the Hector Pieterson Memorial for a brief history on the youth uprisings in the 1970’s. After this we make our way through Vilikazi Street and stop over for some lunch (at your own cost) and a chance to buy some local arts and crafts.

We then head back to the central business district of Johannesburg to immerse ourselves in the regeneration of this city that has reimagined itself over 7 times. Here we take a deep dive into the architecture, history and art which is an integral part of the city scape. We visit local landmarks such as Newton, the first precinct in Johannesburg, as well as a visit to Ghandi Square where a large statue of Mahatma Ghandi was erected to signify the urban renewal imitative of the city. Our last stop is Chancellor House where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo ran the first black legal practice in the country. Thereafter, we head back to Maboneng for a short walk about to discover the art around the neighbourhood, then back to your hostel. Dinner is served at Curiocity

Please note that the tour itinerary is flexible and may change according to the group’s interests for the day. This is your personal tour of our lovely city with our local guide to show you the best sites and places.
