Share basic concepts at local kindergartens, childcare centres and primary schools on the Island of Zanzibar. Help out the local teachers by taking care of the kids, arranging activities an extra pair of hands is always needed.

In this program, you will be assisting teachers and staff at local primary schools and kindergartens on Zanzibar to children aged between 3 - 6 years old. Besides sharing your knowledge of basic English, numbers, colors, etc., you will also help out with caretaking in the classroom and creating educational activities for the children such as drawing and singing.
During your time at this program, you will be working with small children (ages around 3 - 6 years old) at local kindergartens and primary schools spread around the Stone Town area.

Based on the local needs, you will be placed in either a kindergarten, childcare centre or primary school (first two grades). Classes and groups can differ in sizes of 10 - 30 kids. So the extra hands are certainly appreciated by the local staff.

You will collaborate with local staff and teachers and assist them while they manage their class. But you will also have the opportunity to lead groups and create your own activities such as drawing, coloring, games, etc. It's time to get creative!

Your main aim should be to practice English with the children through the use of creative expression; stories, poems, songs and games. Even though the English language is widely taught in Zanzibar, the chance to practice it may not happen often enough in some of the rural areas. The ability to master English can greatly improve the life prospects for many local children.

Please feel free to bring teaching materials such as games, coloured pencils, erasers, English language books, and even clothes and toys to donate. Those items would be welcomed! We recommend you also bring pictures or other small objects representing your country of origin, which you could also turn into an educational lesson that will really broaden the children’s world!

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.
