Aims & Objectives

This project is aimed at developing strategies to help conserve wild elephants, leopards and other wildlife in their natural habitats in Wasgamuwa and also to be actively involved in helping the local community.

Weeks 1-3: Wild Elephant Research & Conservation project

Sunday
If you arrive early on time Sunday, you will be transferred to Wasgamuwa on the same day. If not, we'll take you to our accommodation in Kandy to relax after your flight, and assist you with the transportation to the Wild Elephant Sanctuary on the following day (Monday).

Getting to the Project
You will leave from Kandy for the Wild Elephant Research & Conservation project early in the morning by public transportation (there is only one bus leaving to this area per day). One of the coordinators in Kandy will accompany you to the bus station and give all necessary information to the bus conductor regarding the drop-off. Even though you will be traveling alone by bus or with other participants who are leaving for the same project, a coordinator from the Wild Elephant Research & Conservation project will be at the other end to pick you up from the bus station. The journey takes approximately five hours.

Introduction Day
Your project starts with an introduction day on the first Monday including a tour of the area surrounding the accommodation, available facilities, cultural "do's and don'ts", safety concerns as well as some basic local language lessons.

Week 4: Turtle Conservation - Ambalangoda

Sunday

Monday to Friday
At the Turtle Conservation Center in Ambalangoda, the activities vary according to the beach weather conditions and the number of volunteers, but the time spent with these marvellous creatures is the main aim of our participants' involvement. This program requires hard work and willingness to support the cleaning of the turtles, tanks and the turtle conservation centre. It is vital to have a clean and hygienic centre for these animals. Typical activities include:

Feeding the turtles (every other day)
Cleaning and maintenance of the tanks
Cleaning the turtles
Cleaning the beach
Helping with the weekly release of over 100 newborn turtles into the ocean (depending on the weather and season)

Please note that the schedule is subject to change depending on weather conditions, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.
